Ongoing Initiatives
katha club
Inspired by the community formed through book clubs, the Katha Club aims to create a safe space for Kaurs to gather and learn from various kathas! We are currently following along Nanak Naam’s Anand Sahib series
Community Pantries
Our ongoing pop-up food pantries are one of our favorite outreach initiatives, as we are able to provide fresh produce, groceries, PPE, period products and more for our community
Hot Meal Seva Drive
In collaboration with Khalsa Aid we were able to serve hot meals and pantry items to those in need and help sort and stock the Masbia Queens food pantry. We have since been able to volunteer at Masiba several times, where we are continuously reminded of the pure abundance and privilege in our lives, and feel so grateful for these moments of seva
Past Initiatives
know your immigration rights outreach
We tabled at 118th St Richmond Hill Gurdwara Cultural Society for a Know Your Immigration Rights event with South Queens Women’s March.
We distributed pamphlets and fliers in both English and Punjabi explaining your rights and what to do if ICE shows up at a gurdwara, a place of worship, or your front door. The goal of this event was to raise awareness and arm our community with knowledge and information about their rights.
The community response was overwhelming. Community members of all ages and all immigration status’s showed up to learn more about their rights and those of their friends, neighbors, and family members; they even took multiple pamphlets and fliers to help us disseminate information amongst the wider community.
hygiene kit drive
Our board and KL members were able to come together to pack soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, and more hygiene products to give out to members of the 118St gurudwara that may need it!
Richmond Hill is a large hub for Punjabi immigrants of all ages who many times struggle during their arrival to this country. The gurudwara is a safe haven that we can all continue to nurture through community involvement
mother daughter keertan night
We are so grateful to be able to gather with our elders in sangat in a warm, welcoming and inviting space
Pop-up covid-19 vaccination & Testing
We had the privilege to put up a vaccine and testing pop up at the 118 Street Gurdwara
Kisaan Protest Fundraiser & Outreach
In December 2020 the Kisaan Protest became the largest strike in human history, a protest against the harmful deregulation bills passed by the Indian Government. Kaurageous Love understood the unbelievable spirit and determination of the protestors of all ages who took to the streets in Delhi. To support them, we distributed educational posters to local businesses and hosted a fundraiser where we sold pinnis (a Punjabi sweet delicacy made of desi ghee, wheat flour, jaggery, and nuts) for donations
Census & Voter Registration outreach
During the 2020 Census we hosted several outreach initiatives to help our community complete the Census and fulfill their right to be counted! Richmond Hill has historically had a significantly low response rate and this disparity has only further systemically underrepresented minorities and non-English speaking communities. We were able to meet our community members where they were, in their own mother tongue, and increase Sikh representation in the Census.
LGBTQ+ Panel
Kaurageous Love hosted the first ever LGBTQ+ panel in a Sikh gurudwara. The sangat came and hear stories of Sikhs from their own community that identify as LGBTQ+, and their mothers. It was one of the most fruitful conversations we have ever witnessed. Gurudwaras a place of worship and refuge for all, regardless of your gender identity or sexuality
Winter Hygiene Kits
We made 100 hygiene kits, with the support of Khlasa Aid, for WIN (Women in Need), the largest housing provider for women and children experiencing homelessness in New York City
Vaisakhi Celebration at the Rubin Museum
In 2018 we were able to celebrate Vaisakhi at the Rubin Museum. The focus was on the Divine Womxn and the grace of living as a Sikh Womxn in New York City. The exhibition was full of meditation, connection, and educating people of all ages and races on what it means to be a Sikh Womxn and a proud member of the Khalsa panth
Public Speaking Workshop
The Public Speaking Workshop brought together residents of all ages to learn from each other in a supportive space. Not only did we share tips and tricks to succeed in public speaking, but we also delved into underlying fears of failure and the insecurities that emerge during nerve racking public speaking situations
Love & Consent Workshop
The Love & Consent Workshop facilitated conversations regarding sexual harassment, knowing your worth, becoming aware of your own biases, and other crucial topics
Be Kaurageous Workshops
Be Kaurageous was our inaugural event, which aimed to create an open and empowering space for mothers and daughters to come together. Through a series of exercises, activities, and discussions we hoped to bring power and unity to these crucial and beautiful relationships. We invited mothers and daughters to discuss some of the frequent misunderstandings they have with each other, with the goal of bridging those gaps and helping both sides have a better understanding of each other
